wikihost.uib.no is a MediaWiki service the IT department provides to the faculties, institutes, departments and research groups at UIB.
What is Wiki?
- With the Wiki you can produce text information with other people in a simple manner.
Wikepedia is a good example, and Wikihost-service uses the same technology: 'Mediawiki'
- You decide whether the information should be available to all the world, only UiB or only for your own ‘wiki’ group (institute, research-group or faculty).
- One or more people can work with the same information at the same time in the Wiki.
- All changes will be preserved in revisions
that means you get a history of the changes, and can go back and see how the document looked like at a certain time.
- No information is lost, every change is preserved.
- You can also register a “watch” on the wiki-document and you will receive an email each time someone makes a change to the wiki page.
Wiki is a publishing tool where many can participate and contribute their knowledge and experiences.
Do you want a MediaWiki instance for your faculty, institutes, department or research group?
You will get:
- a separate MediaWiki installation, installed by us, also called a wiki instance
- opportunities to manage the access to other users from UiB
- it is also possible to create accounts if there are people from other institutions who should have access
- The IT department will provide backup of the data in the database
- The IT department will make sure to upgrade when it’s time for new versions
The wiki will be available at:
http://wikihost.uib.no/XXXwiki
Where XXXwiki is the name of the wiki.
Alternative to wiki
If your wiki is intended for a small group of people to work together, then prosjekt.uib.no is a much simpler and easier alternative.

Extensions
Some have special requests for extensions beyond what is offered.
These wishes can be entered via http://bs.uib.no (stamp the issue with: "extension, wikihost")
But: even if we want to offer most of the functionality, we reserve the right to decide whether the extension is installed or not.

If you want the creation of a new wiki instance
Go to https://bs.uib.no (make a new issue and refer to this page).
We ask that the following points be answered:
- What should the wiki instance be called? Short name description. For example PROWIKI
- Which language should the wiki be in?
- Should the wiki be readable for the whole world?
- Who should be able to log into the wiki in order to change the content? (Organization, location code, user accounts). Can be changed later.
- Give an eventual list with: first name, last name and UIB username for those who must have administrator rights in the wiki (and bureacrat sysop rights).
- Should everyone at your institution be able to read and change the content?
Support
We’re unable to provide support in how to make wiki-pages and how to work in the wiki.
