All UiB users have access to email through a web browser using [https://webmail.uib.no webmail]. UiB computers run by the IT department will automatically receive an email setup in [[Thunderbird]] and [[Outlook]] corresponding to who is logged on. You may still want to set up an email client on a private computer or UiB computer not run by the IT department. Here is the information you need to do that. Your e-mail is linked to the account you have as a student or employee (which you receive and manage via SEBRA). You may read your e-mail in different ways to your liking, or depending on the type of connection you use.

The easiest way is to use a normal web browser without , by logging in to one of the websites outlook.office.com, kalender.uib.no or webmail.uib.no/.

Although this is an easy solution, it is hardly an effective tool for those who use e-mail a lot, receive many messages or have greater demands on the e-mail program. Then you should have a separate e-mail program on your machine.

Incoming mail server

The IT department recommends IMAP if you want to have access to your email from more than one computer, and want backup on a UiB server. If you choose POP in stead, you should consider to set it up to leave mail on server (if available). You should also be aware that if you read email on more than one computer, parts of your email will be spread on all of those computers. If you have a large inbox, POP is particularly slow.

Problems sending email outside UiB? See below.

Problems?

The IT department in general does not offer support for private equipment, but will try to give some information on web for some problems which are common for UiB users.

You may have problems sending email through UiB's smtp servers when you are connected to Internet outside UiB. Using VPN should solve the problem, or just log on to check your inbox before you try to send.

Check other pages about email, look for a relevant FAQ or search this site. You may, of course, also try to search the Internet.

Students who have problems may ask a IT-assistants. Maybe ho/she is able to have a quick look and give some advice.
