All UiB users have access to email through a web browser using webmail. UiB computers run by the IT department will automatically receive an email setup in Thunderbird and Outlook corresponding to who is logged on. You may still want to set up an email client on a private computer or UiB computer not run by the IT department. Here is the information you need to do that. Different email clients often also has additional settings according to available funcionality.
Account name
Your email account name is the same as your logon name on UiB computers, SEBRA, My Space, etc.
Email address
Students
firstname.lastname@student.uib.no
- or
username@uib.no or
You may prefer to use capital letters.
Examples: edvard.grieg@student.uib.no, Edvard.Grieg@student.uib.no, egr789@uib.no
Employees
firstname.lastname@xyz.uib.no (xyz should be replaced with your departments abbreviation, like med, ii, sars, etc.)
- or
firstname.lastname@uib.no
- or
username@uib.no
You may prefer to use capital letters.
Examples: edvard.grieg@grieg.uib.no, Edvard.Grieg@uib.no, egr789@uib.no
Incoming mail server
The IT department recommends IMAP if you want to have access to your email from more than one computer, and want backup on a UiB server. If you choose POP in stead, you should consider to set it up to leave mail on server (if available). You should also be aware that if you read email on more than one computer, parts of your email will be spread on all of those computers. If you have a large inbox, POP is particularly slow.
IMAP setup (recommended)
Incoming mail server / IMAP server

Students: imap.student.uib.no

Students: pop.student.uib.no
Check SSL for secure encrypted logon

Employees: smtp.uib.no
Students: smtp.student.uib.no
Problems sending email outside UiB? See below.
Problems?
The IT department in general does not offer support for private equipment, but will try to give some information on web for some problems which are common for UiB users.
You may have problems sending email through UiB's smtp servers when you are connected to Internet outside UiB. Using VPN should solve the problem, or just log on to check your inbox before you try to send.
Check other pages about email, look for a relevant FAQ or search this site. You may, of course, also try to search the Internet.
Students who have problems may ask a IT-assistants. Maybe ho/she is able to have a quick look and give some advice.
